Buddhism
Buddhism is woven into the very fabric of Thai life.
Here’s how it shapes their culture:
Wats
Ancient temples called Wats are adorned with exotic, intricate carvings and shimmering gold. Monks in saffron robes glide silently through courtyards while the worshippers offer alms (food) to monks, believing it brings blessings.
The Wai
Thais greet each other with the wai, a graceful gesture where palms meet in prayer position. This is to show respect and greet one another. There are different Wai depending upon whether one is an elderly person, official, or friend.

Jai Yen Yen
Thai tends to not create a fuss over small, menial things and this leads to more individual peace and community harmony. They prefer to conduct themselves in a calm manner that promotes harmony. To do so means one has jai yen yen or a “cool heart” versus having a jai rawn or “hot heart.” You will rarely see a Thai losing their temper or speaking angrily.
Kreng jai
Kreng Jai is the custom of consideration for others and not wanting to impose on others. It’s a way to express sensitivity to someone’s else feelings. The direct translation is ‘deferential heart’ and is a reflection of a Thai person’s consideration and kindness to one another.
Islam
About 5% of the Thai culture consists of Islam and it’s practiced mainly in the Southern provinces. Thai Muslims live in Malaysia, Cambodia, China and beyond. Thai Muslims culture blends with Thai tradition harmoniously; Mosques and Minarets exist as elegant structures next to Buddhist temples; Colorful silk fabrics, aromatic spices, and mouth-watering halal cuisine all create a beautiful mosaic of cultural endowment.
Thai Sufis perform a traditional, mystical dance where they spin to the point of creating a trance-like state that allows them to connect with the universe and heavens.
Christianity
The Thai Christian community although small is still significant and part of the beautiful and diverse tapestry of Thai culture. Thai Christians attend church and celebrations and this is a reflection of the unique and diverse religious complexity that is so present in everyday life.

Thai culture is a symphony of religious and cultural beliefs
that harmoniously infuses the Thai people’s every day life.
