Basic Language Tips
- Don’t be afraid of mistakes. People understand you’re trying to adapt to their language and culture and most will be accommodating.
- Write down some basic words and practice them before you leave. You can sign up for classes of use online language courses like Babel or Rosetta Stone. If you didn’t have the time to invest to learn the language, at the very least, try to memorize basic words on your flight to your destination. You’ll have plenty of time.
- Keep a list of basic words in your pocket.
- Although you might feel foolish, use sign language when communicating. It’s surprising how much people can communicate with hands and gestures! Just be sure that you don’t perform any hand gestures which may be offensive.
- Different hand gestures in different languages mean different things. Make sure you aren’t giving a hand gesture that may be offensive.
- Be sure to install Google Translator app on your phone and use it.
- Make sure to write down the currency conversions and keep it in your pocket to glance at when purchasing items. You don’t want to accidentally overpay.
