The Ocean’s Elegance: The Manta Rays
Beneath the moonlit waves, they glide with grace, Hahalua,
the manta rays, in an oceanic embrace. Their wings whisper secrets of the deep blue sea,
A dance of wisdom, strength, and serenity.
The Big Island is home to the most beautiful, elegant creatures, the Manta Rays. Seeing them swim in the waves in the moonlight is otherworldy and surreal, it’s like watching a silk ribbon drift in and out of the waves. These timeless, mysterious creatures are captivating.
They first appear as a speck in the ocean waves, and then start to twirl, loop, and glide with the waves. Sometimes you will get a glimpse of them, and other times you will question whether it was just your imagination playing tricks.
Mythology
In Hawaiian mythology, the manta ray is considered an ‘aumakua, or a protective ancestral spirit. The name “hahalua” translates to “two breaths,” reflecting the belief that manta rays possess two sets of gills and require two breaths to swim. This duality represents their connection between the ocean depths and the surface world.
Legends and Beliefs
In the Kumulipo, the Hawaiian creation chant, mantas are mentioned which underscores their importance in the natural hierarchy of the ocean. They are revered for their grace and mystery, often seen as guardians of the ocean. When manta rays leap out of the water, it is believed they transcend their underwater realm and bring back knowledge and energy from the depths to the world.
Manta rays continue to captivate us all with their elegance, beauty, and mystery. They’re best appreciated in the evening when they can be seen swim within the waves under the glistening moonlight. Nighttime snorkeling and diving tours in Kailua Kona allow people to witness these gentle giants up close, creating unforgettable experiences.
